STRONG 2 OPENING

2/1 system reserve 2
opening for strong hands that obey the follow conditions:
- need 21+ hcp (high cards points);
- limited in 3 losers when the minor is the long suit;
- limited in 4 losers when the major is the long suits.
There many hands that are not qualified or recommended to be an opening in 2
, like:
AKQJxxxxxx
x x x (3 losers) or
AKQ7
AKQ7 J1063 A (23 hcp) or
AKQ
AKQ J63 K932 (22 hcp) or
7
J7 AKQJ3 AKQJ9 (21 hcp).
7
J AKQJ3 AKQJ95 (21 hcp).

The Evolution of Negative Response
1) Opener Responder
        2
      2
<= means 0-7 hcp
        positive response need 5-card suit
        with 3 controls (A+K or 3K)
----------------
2) Opener Responder
        2
      ? response of Aces
         by Pierre Albarran (1984-1960)
                 2
<= no aces up to 7 hcp
                 2
<= promises only A
                 2
<= promises only A
               2NT <= no aces but 8+ hcp
                 3
<= promises only A

                 3
<= promises only A

3 <= promises AKQxxx
                 3
<= promises AKQxxx

3NT <= promises 2 Aces
                4 <= weak 6 cards
                4
<= weak 6 cards
               4NT <= promises 3 Aces
   after Aces showed 4NT ask for Kings
------------------
3)
Control-showing responses
   This approach search Aces and Kings
   A = 2 controls and K = 1 control
    Opener Responder
       2
      ? response of controls
                2
<= 0 or 1 control
                2
<= 2 controls (A or 2K)
                2
<= 3 controls (A + K)
              2NT <= 3 Kings
                3
<= 4 controls
This a good schema to know the strength but no make easy to know if Responder has a good suit with only one loser.

------------------
4) Opener Responder
       2
      2 <= WAITING might have good hand, but don’t distinguish if a 5-cards suit have top honor or just a King as honor and Responder rebids a cheaper minor defines 2nd negative that denies A K and 2Q so after 2/2 then 3 shows bust hand and after 3 then 3 shows bust hand and after 3 then 3 shows bust hand. Thus, this waste room during the bid without Opener know Responder suits and distribution.

5) Opener Responder (2
bust hand)
        2
     2
<= no A, no K, no 2 Qs
       and so 2
is GF even with 1K or 2Q
       positive bid need 2 top honors in
       5-cards major or 6-cards minor.

Possible statistics about 2
responses
36%  2
GF with response 2 bust
25%  Controls – ask number A and K
21%  2
waiting, cheaper minor 2nd neg
10%  2
negative, 2 positive
  4%  Point-count step responses
  4%  Other artificial systems

*****************************
We recommend response 2
GF with 2 bust not necessarily forcing one-round. We assume that a positive hand must have good 5-card suits for major or 6-card suit for minor with 2 top honors (AK/AQ/KQ) and so do not necessarily need 3 controls (A+K). Thus, a positive hand should be determined by good cards like KQ1098x.

Using response 2
bust implies the response in 2NT be a positive response in Hearts that allow the Opener to make a transfer with 3 cards in Hearts making agreement to Hearts as trump suit, and of course, to receive the lead.
Thus, after 2
, maximum negative, the bidding can be stop at 2NT or in a suit at level 2 or 3, in situations where Responder's hand are very poor like: 954 7x J742 9743 and Opener's hand is like:
AKQ
AKx AK7 43
AK
AQJ63 KQ2 A43
K3
AQ6 K3 AKQJ10
*****************************

Note1: there are unbalanced hands with 21-22 hcp that aren’t eligible for 2
opening because they have more than 4 losers and are not semi-balanced hands qualified to be opened in 2NT.

Let’s separate 2
opening in 3 types:
1- balanced hands distribution: 4333 or 4432 or 5332 with 22-29 hcp;
2- unbalanced hands with 21+ hcp having singleton or void, including some semi balanced hands having 5422 or 6322 distribution;
3- strong 3 suits in 4441 distribution with 22+ hcp.

1) Balanced Hands - Opener's second bid
After a bidding with no interference
Opener Responder
   2
      2
<= waiting and GF (game forcing)
    ? => Opener's second bid shows the ranges:
  2NT => 22-23 hcp,
  3NT => 24-25 hcp,
    3
 => 26-27 hcp artificial bid -
  …………………. nothing with

  4NT => 28-29 hcp

Note: After Opener 2nd bid shows balanced hand Responder become the captain for the final contract and Responder bidding Clubs is Stayman for majors, Responder bidding Diamonds is transfer o Hearts, Responder bidding Hearts is transfer to Spades, Responder bidding Spades is transfer to Clubs and Responder bidding Clubs in jump is transfer to Diamonds.

Opener Responder
   2
      2
<= maximum negative
    ? => Opener's second bid shows the ranges:
  2NT => 22-25 hcp,
  3NT => 26-30 hcp,

Note2: The balanced hands with 26-27 hcp after 2
response should be bided as sign-off in 3NT (you don’t need to show exactly the range in hcp you have).

After Opener bids a balanced suit hand the captain (the player that defines the final contract) is the Responder and after 3NT he may ask for major in 4 Stayman or making transfer in 4=>4 or 4=>4 or 4=>5 or 5=>5.
In unbalanced hands generally it is the strong hand that defines the final contract, but a collaboration bidding is always necessary as maximum possible. So, when a player self-considers well known to take the final decision, he should finish the bidding.

2) Unbalanced hands - Opener's second bid
Opener Responder
 2
        2
<= waiting and GF
  ?  => Opener bids unbalanced hands:
 2
=> 5+ cards
 2
=> 5+ cards
 3
 => 6+ cards mostly
 3
 => 6+ cards mostly
Note3: If partnership play Stayman in 2NT then Opener with 5332 may bid his 5-card major after 2
, but if partnership play Puppet or Muppet (recommended) Opener with 22-23 must bid 2NT to clarify better his hand.

3) 3 suits 4441 22-27 hcp
Rule#0: Opener shows his singleton suit jumping in a suit under the singleton suit starting with 3
that shows singleton Clubs.
Opener Responder
 2
        2
waiting and GF
  ?
 3 <= 4441 singleton Clubs
 4
<= 4441 singleton Diamonds
 4
<= 4441 singleton Hearts
 4 <= 4441 singleton Spades
If the singleton suit is an Ace then the hand should be bid as 3NT.
After Opener jump the captain is the Responder and 4NT by Responder is to play.
Responder can’t stop the bidding in the Opener’s singleton suit.
---------------------
A bid in the Opener’s singleton suit ask for controls (A=2 K=1) in 4 steps:
step1 = up to 6 controls
step2 = 7 controls
step3 = 8 controls
step4 = 9 controls (all controls)
A singleton K or singleton Q should be count as no value card.
A second bid in Opener’s singleton suit ask for the number of Queens in 3 steps:
step1 = 0/1 Queen
step2 = 2 Queens
step3 = 3 Queens
In these sequences any suit bid by Responder is sign-off.

4) 3 suits 4441 22-27 hcp
Opener Responder
 2
        2
(max negative)
  ?
 3 <= 4441 singleton Clubs
 4
<= 4441 singleton Diamonds
 4
<= 4441 singleton Hearts
 4 <= 4441 singleton Spades
Responder may pass – not GF because Responder’s hand may have long suit in the Opener’s singleton suit and this is a misfit hand.

======================

Opener's second bid after 2
response allow Responder to pass in 2, 2NT, 3 or 3 or 3. Thus, after a 2 response Opener having 9 tricks in No Trump, or 10 tricks in a major suit, or 11 tricks in a minor suit, must jump directly to game to avoid a possible pass from Responder that has nothing to bid with 4333 or 4432 distribution hand and up to 2 hcp. But if Opener has 3 suits in distribution 4441, he must explain that to Responder take decision.

Important: after a 2
undefined response or 2 maximum negative response, Responder priority is to support Opener suit or bid a suit only with 5+ cards, otherwise Responder must bid No Trump up the line to show 4432 or 4333 or 4441.

An opener having two long suits (6-5 hands) should have his opening in level 1 even with 3 losers avoiding a big problem to show both suits after response in 2
- that allow Responder to pass in a part score level or if opponents interfere in level 3 or even in level 4 with a preemptive bid and Responder double to show a negative hand.

Opener Responder
  2
       2
    <= the waiting bid is GF with an undefined hand that must have 5+ HCP or unless a King or an Ace. So, with xxx Kxx xxxx xxx or Axx xxx xxx xxxx or Qxx xxx Q10xxx xx those hands with less than 5 hcp are eligible to be bided as 2.
In fact the 2
-response bid exclude a possible 5+ cards major suit with 2 top honors or a weak hand with 6/7 cards and only an Ace or King.

Note4: Is well known in bridge that a King is 1 control, and an Ace is 2 controls, so we say that a hand without any control is candidate to be a response in 2
after 2 opening mainly if it is a 4333 hand.

Opener's second bid with balanced hands
Opener Responder

  ?
a) 2NT = 22-23 hcp, in this case Responder need use the same convention that partnership uses when the Opening is in 2NT. Normally:
3
asking for major;
3
transfer to 3;
3
transfer to 3;
3
Stayman for minor - Opener 3NT deny minor;
4
Gerber (asking for aces: 4
=4, 4=1, 4=2, 4NT=3) is a reserve bid for special cases  when Responder has zero Aces but good cards sequences in a minor suit like:

x
x KJxx KJ87xxx or Kx x Qxx K1098xxx
and needs 3 Aces in Opener's hand to try slam.
After the Opener response for a Gerber asking for aces the following all bids by Responder are sign-off: 4NT, 5
or 5
and any slam bided.
The follow bids are transfers after 2NT:
4
transfer to 4 showing a very weak hand  5/6 cards;
4
transfer to 4 showing a very weak hand  5/6 cards;
4
transfer to 5 showing a weak hand 6/7 cards;
5
transfer to 5
showing a weak hand 6/7 cards.
After a transfer for major Responder bidding 4NT is RKB0314 in the major bided by Opener.

b) 3NT = 24-25 HCP, Responder bids: pass, 4
Stayman and if Opener denies major then 4NT is sign-off, 4
/4 transfers to majors, 4 transfer to 5, 4NT Blackwood for Aces, 5 transfer to 5;

c) 3
= 26-27 HCP, Responder bids: 3 relay to 3NT (possible sign-off), 4 Stayman, 4/4 are transfers to majors, 4 transfer to 5, 4NT Blackwood for Aces, 5 transfer to 5

d) 3
= 4441 with singleton in Hearts 22-27 HCP and Responder become the captain.

Note5: When Responder is asking for a major in 4 (Stayman), it is possible that Responder has both majors or a 5431 distributional hand and he is trying a better contract in suit avoiding to play in No Trump with a singleton.
So, if Opener bids 4
= no major, then Responder biddings his 5card-major is sign-off.
With just one long major Responder makes transfer.  Example:
Opener Responder
  2
       2
=> bust 98543 10654 843
 3NT <= 25-26 HCP
             4
<= asking for major (5431)
   ?
  4
<= no major - then 4/4 is sign-off
  4
<= 4 cards  - pass <= 4 cards
  4
<= 4 cards  - pass <= 4 cards
 4NT <= solid minor 10 tricks - sign-off

Note6: After 2
response 2
, when Opener's second bid is 3NT (24-25 hcp), if Responder's hand is to play in Clubs (or in Diamonds) and not in no trump (no entry), a transfer bid is necessary and is bided in 4 transfer to 5 or 5 transfer to 5,
example:
.....Opener:
AK9
AJ8 AQ75 AK
Responder:
98
8432 1076543
Opener  Responder
   2
        2
<= max negative
  3NT      4
<= transfer to 5
   5
       pass

POSITIVE RESPONSES - Responder's first bid
After strong 2
open, a positive response traditionally shows 3+ controls (A and K or 3K), but in modern bidding it is more important systematize a positive response with a good suit having 2 top honors (AK/AQ/KQ) and 5+ cards for a major suit or 6+ cards for a minor suit, examples:
Opener  Responder
  2
         ?
      2
=> KQJ1087
Jx Q10xx x
                 or
AQ1087
Jx K9xxx x
      2NT=>
Q7
AQJxxx xxx xx
                 or
87
KQJxxx Qxxx x
      3
=> K7
Jxx xx AQ109xx
                 or
7
Q10x xx KQ10xxxx
      3
=> 87 Qxx AKQxx xx
                 or
1087
Jx KQJ9xxx x

Note7: After 2
opening the positive response for Hearts is made in 2NT, and it allows the transfer for the strong hand when Opener has 3
+ cards.

Special Weak Responses After 2
Open - Responder's first bid
A weak long suit up to 5 hcp with 6/7 cards could be clarified in the bidding with a jump response. So, for a major suit with 6 cards the jump is to level 3 and with 7 cards is to level 4, but the requirement is the suit must have a top honor with K or A, of course never both together and the long suit cannot include the Queen (AQ or KQ because then is a positive hand), and nothing more. For a minor suit the jump is only at level 4 with 7 cards. Examples:
Responder Opener
                   2

  ?
3
=> KJxxxx or A109xxx just A or K and 6 cards:

xx
KJ10xxx xxx Jx or xx A109xxx xx xxx
  -----------------------------
3
=> KJxxxx or A9xxxx just A or K and 6 cards:

Rules After Response 2/2

Rule#1: When Opener's second bid shows a unbalanced hand 2/2/3/3 If Responder first bid was 2 then Responder's second bid raise is more strong than a jump support, but if Responder first bid was 2 then it is the opposite, because the GF is dubious, and the jump shows the maximum of the negative 2 with some good distributional hand to game.

Rule#2:
After the Opener second bid in 2
or 2 Responder should bid other suit only with 5+ cards. So, with a 4432 hand he should bid 2NT having up to 7 hcp and 3NT with 8-10 hcp and may have singleton in the Opener suit:

Rule#3: When the strong 2 Opener hand is 64XX with a 6 cards minor and 4 cards major, Opener bids first his 6 cards minor in level 3 and after he bids his 4 cards major at level 4 and Responder with 3 cards in the major and 2 cards in the minor must choose the minor.
Example:
.....Opener =

Opener Responder

        2

   3
       3NT  <= no 5 cards major
   4
       5 < prefer 8 cards fit
  pass   <= Opener knows Responder has only 2

Rule#4: After 2
opening the positive response in a suit are 2, 2NT (means
suit), 3 and 3. A major suit can be bid positive with 5+ cards, and a minor suit needs 6+ cards (or very good 5-cards), and all need 2 top honors (AK/AQ/KQ), this is fundamental.

xx 10xx J9xx
 2
        3
=> xx x KQ987xxx xx
 2
       2NT => xx
AQ10732 K87 xx

Rule#5: After 2
opening the waiting response bid in 2
is a undefined hand that promises 5+ hcp or K or A but denies many types of hands like positive 2 top honors in a suit, weak 6/7 cards ahead  by A or K and the maximum negative hand. So, Opener with that information add to others information bring by the bidding where we postulate that a Responder's second bid in suit only having 5+ cards allow Opener had a good picture of Responder's hand to take decision for final contract.

Rule#6: After interference in 2
, at any level by opponents then:
1- Double by Responder shows a negative hand: no Ace no King;
2- Responder bidding any suit shows a positive hand with 2 tops honors;
3- Responder passing means a waiting bidding;
4- Responder cuebid in opponent suit shows singleton positive 4441 or 5431
5- Responder bidding 2NT or 3NT means a balanced positive hand 8-10 hcp with stopper.

Examples for 3 strong suits:
27) Opener:
AKQx
AJ94 x AKJ4
Responder:
87
K104 A86 Q10952
Opener Responder
  2
       2
 <= waiting and GF
  4
<= 3 suits and singleton Diamonds
  ………  4
<= ask for controls
  step1 = up to 6 controls
  step2 = 7 controls
  step3 = 8 controls
  step4 = 0 controls All
 4NT <= step3 = 8 controls so missing a King
               that is with Responder!
  ………  5
<= ask for Queens
  5
<= zero or 1 Queen
  ………   7

  pass

Analysis by Responder: Opener hand may have 30 hcp – we do not count hcp in the singleton suit – we know that Opener has 3 Aces and 2 Kings that means 18 hcp and remain possible 3 J and 2 Q because we have one Q. He answers that he has zero or one Q, Opener minimum hand is 22 hcp if he has only 3 Jacks then he has 21 hcp and so can’t have zero Q. Conclusion Opener has at least one Q. The possible Queen are Q and Q
, Responder has Q. So, the third Hearts loser can be discarded in the Q and if Opener has the Q then more easy to make 13 tricks.

Bottom Line: Besides 2
be a strong hand after response of 2 if Opener has 4 losers, then the final contract may be a part score, so there are no absolute GF in this opening.
If the strong hand has 4441 distribution then after response of 2
, that is GF, the second bid of Opener should bid in jump a suit under his singleton:
with 4414 opener bids 4 singleton
with 4
4
41 opener bids 3 singleton
with 4
1
44 opener bids 4 singleton
with 1
4
44 opener bids 4 singleton

Remember that 3
bid after response 2 it is reserved to show a balanced hand with 26-27 hcp – nothing with 3 suits. Remember that 4NT after 2 it is reserved to show a balanced hand with 28-29 hcp nothing with asking for Aces.
