NO TRUMPS FORCING (AND INVERTED AFTER 1 OPEN)

Playing SAYC (Standard American Yellow Card) after the Opener bid a major suit in level 1 the Responder with 6-9 hcp (high cards points A=4, K=3, Q=2. J=1) and a long minor suit 6/7 cards without support of 3 cards to Opener suit must bid 1nt and then Opener can pass.
Opener  Responder
   1
          1nt        Opener: K9x AQ9xx xx KJx
   pass                Responder:
xxx xx KQJ10xx xx
Of course, opponents lead in a black suit and they hold
A until the communication is break, so all good diamonds aren't used and contract goes down.

In evolution of the system, when your partner opens in a major suit, playing "2 over 1 game forcing", it is now part of the system that response of 1nt after a major open makes the auction one round force and then the Responder can also bid his long suit as a sign-off.

1NT FORCING
Opener    Responder              or    Opener   Responder
   1
         1NT  <= forcing              1           1NT  <= forcing
and the range of 1NT change from 6-9 to 5-11 hcp

However,
after partner has opened 1
, many partnerships adopt an inverted response bidding for 1 and 1NT,  because this makes an improvement in the bidding like did the old Flannery 2 system 50 years ago, for hand’s open having 4522.

Without the inverted response, minimum hands (12-15 hcp) in 4=5=2=2 distribution like:
KJxx Q9xxx Ax Kx   or   AQxx J87xx Ax Qx
have no suitable bid after 1NT forcing because Opener would have to bid two Clubs with  only 2 cards or rebid his
suit with only 5 cards.

Examples of 1nt inverted and forcing are:
Opener Opponent Responder
  1
         pass       1S  => that's 1NT forcing (5-11 hcp) up to 4 cards in ;
                                              Responder:

SO NOW LETS ANALYZE THE BIDS AND RESPONSES IN
NT FORCING AFTER 1
/1 OPEN USING INVERTED NT

After 1
S from responder, the opener of 1 bids:
A) 1NT showing 4 cards in
(hand type 4=5-x-x) and minimum (12-15 hcp). If responder has 4 cards in he bids 2 with 5-9 hcp and 3 with 10-11 hcp, 4 with 12-15 hcp, and others forcing bids like splinters, RKC ...

E) 2NT to show strong hand 18-20 HCP GF, having 4 cards in other suit (hand type 5-4-x-x) or having 6
cards. This bid will distinguish a 5-5 distribution from a 5-4 distribution avoiding a jump in the second suit with only 4 cards.
So after 2NT GF the responder alert his 3
 bid asking for explanation of the suit and distribution:

If responder bids a different suit, without asking 3
, this is sign-off, so if he bids your singleton or doubleton you should pass, but if was your tripleton (or 4 cards in a tri-color hand) you can think in game and depending on yours first controls in the majors and honor in support of your partner, you make a invitation or directly bid game or maybe a small slam!

After 1
S from responder, the opener of 1 bids:
F) Jump in another suit is 5-5-x-x with 18-20 hcp. The exception occurs in the rarely hands like 6-5-x-x where the 15-17 hcp are all concentrated in the 2 suits making strong suits with less than 4 losers, because with less than 21 hcp you can't open in 2
 even with 2 presumable losers!

Experience shows us numerous disasters when the opener of 2 Clubs having two long suits, after a big preemptive bid from opponent, must make his second declaration at level 5 and his partner passes in his singleton having 4 cards in the other unbidden suit.

After 1
S from responder, the opener of 1 bids:
G) Jump in the same suit (denying closed suit) is always a problem because some partnerships prefer to use the jump just in invitation cases, with 6 cards and 16-17 hcp (used more), and others use it in game forcing to show 18-20 hcp. Both ask for 2 cards support from partner, but the first case (invitation) needs also 8 hcp or more to continue.
In both cases another suit from responder shows weak hand with 6 or 7 cards, so with singleton the Opener can pass even with maximum hand.

*************************************************************
Note: In hands with 16-17 hcp, opener after limited response bid of 5-11 hcp must bid like having 12-15 hcp in first round and bid again if he has chance:

Opener Responder
    1
        1S  <= 5-11 hcp
    ?
 2
/2  => 12-17 hcp waiting for Responder's 2o. bid to pass or bid again

S        1nt => 5-11 hcp
     ?
 2
/2/2  => 12-17 hcp waiting for Responder's 2o. bid to pass or bid again

It is prudent assuming  always partner with minimum range, hand 5-7 hcp in principle. So, he needs to bid like having 12-15 hcp and not 16-17 hcp, because a jump is reserved only for a strong hand with 18-20 hcp.

Partner could have a middle range hcp (8-9) or a maximum range hcp (10-11) hand. If your partner has a maximum range (10-11 hcp) after your bid, he must bid again:
- normally 2NT or
- jumping to his long suit or
- jump to your open suit to show 3 cards support or
- making a simple raise invitation in your second suit.
In all these cases you can go to game without problem.

It is important to emphasize  the substantial difference in support at level 3 between SAYC and 2/1:

Opener Responder

2minor   3
 10-11 hcp
   support  3 cards
==================

Opener's decision is more qualified in 2/1 because he knows support length

When you have a 5332 hand with 15-17 hcp and 5 cards majors the first recommendation is open in the major because you play Stayman and that not allow you to find a 5-3 fit, but there are exceptions where the open in 1nt with 5 cards majors is acceptable as the best approach if you need protect some honors like Kx or AQ, so with weak major suit and good stoppers in all others suits like AQ10 108765 A109 AQ this avoid your partner bid nt!
